S.O.F.A. - We are a non-profit organization formed to promote fresh, high quality, domestic fish. Formed in Madeira Beach over 30 years ago, S.O.F.A. was originally more of a social club for grouper fishermen than anything else. Over the
years we have worked hard to enhance the image of the American fisherman. We have worked together with other groups and many agencies, both state and federal, to keep the Gulf of Mexico clean and environmentally secure.
“This is an update on the status of Amendment 53 and gag, red grouper, and red snapper landings as of 2-28 according to the nmfs council presentation.
First, no final rule on A53 has been issued as of today, 3-31-22. My last communication with John Sanchez who had spoken to Andy Strelcheck, is that the nmfs is currently reviewing all the comments sent on A53 and they expect to file a final rule by April 15. They have to issue something no later than 5-2 as that is the drop dead to reinstated the held back quota or not. I suspect more will be learned next week at the council meeting in Gulf Shores, AL. The nmfs must provide a response to each comment submitted which is what I suspect is taking so long as they want all their bases covered.
As of 2-28 red grouper landings were 537,840 lbs, 17.9% of the current quota. Gag landings were 939,000 lbs, 20.6%, and red snapper landings were 1,254,995 lbs, 18.1%. I previously sent all a copy of the Mar ssc report which includes their recommendations for increases in the red snapper OFL 18.9 million Lbs and ABC of 16.31 million Lbs. This will be further discussed at the meeting. There is concern among nmfs and ssc personnel about the status of red snapper and of the great red snapper count data.”
The NMFS has approved the final rule for the Gulf Council Amendment 53, red grouper. The official Federal Register post will be done for Monday, May 2, 2022. As all know we have been requesting donations for a potential lawsuit should this happen. It has now happened and a lawsuit will be filed soon. We need to raise more funds to fight the NMFS and overturn A53. Please contact us today with your donation to the SOFA Defense Fund.
